Supporting children with their literacy

FROM AGE 4 TO 11

Learning to read is a core skill that can help to give children the best start in life. Through ‘The Next Chapter’, we focus on ensuring that children in Guernsey are able to develop the literacy skills they need to thrive.

‘The Next Chapter’

Research clearly indicates that children who struggle with literacy are far more likely to fall behind age-related expectations, whereas high levels of literacy are proven to negate socio-economic factors both at school and in the workplace.

Our work helps to close the gap in attainment between the highest and lowest achievers, ensuring that all children have equal opportunities to be successful. Available to local mainstream primary schools, the initiative relies on the support of our corporate partners and community volunteers.

Reading volunteers

We train and facilitate reading volunteers to support children’s reading within schools in Guernsey. Each of our volunteers are connected with a school where they read with primary age students, helping to nurture a greater love of reading. Their regular commitment helps young people to access literacy skills, communicate effectively and make sense of the wider world along the way.

During the annual Summer Reading Challenge, ‘The Next Chapter’ volunteers assist the Guille-Allès Library to further support children in their literacy journey.
